On Monday March 20th at 4.45 pm UNISG will host in its Aula Magna a conference by Roberto Peccei, Professor Emeritus of Theory of Elementary Particles, Astroparticle Physics, and Phenomenology at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and vice president of the Club of Rome.
The theme of the conference is “The Anthropocene and the Club of Rome” and will deal with the concept of Anthropocene, the most recent geologic time period of the Earth, as being human-influenced.
The Club of Rome, in its seminal first report The Limits to Growth, pointed out that, if humanity continues on its present path of unfettered growth, it risks planetary collapse. Due to this accelerated growth, in the last 200 years, humans have become the principal force on the planet, justifying calling the present era the Anthropocene. In this talk, Prof. Peccei, who is the son of Aurelio Peccei, the founder of the Club of Rome, will discuss what steps mankind must take to survive the Anthropocene. In this regard, a variety of issues will be considered, including the role of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the transition to a renewable energy economy, decoupling of resources use from well-being, a circular economy, and the Paris Climate agreement. The conference will include some comments on the impact that the Trump Administration may have on the sustainability agenda for our planet.
